David Maister’s “Why (Most) Training is Useless”
November 6, 2006

WOW, does that catch your attention or not? It should and his down loadable PDF document/article is very thought provoking.

A summarization:
Maister believes that the majority of business training, by himself and by everyone else, is a waste of money and time, because only a microscopic fraction of training is ever put into practice and the hoped-for benefits obtained.

Companies train people in new areas but then send them back to their operating groups, subject to the same measures and management approaches as before.Do you reward these people for how well their group has done, or do you reward them for their own personal …

The Current status of Blended and eLearning in the corporate environment

Recently came across a posting from eLearn Magazine that included some interesting comments about eLearning and especially “Blended Learning”.          Read on……………………………

Five Questions… for Lance Dublin
By Lisa Neal, Editor-in-Chief, eLearn Magazine  Lance Dublin is widely known for his work in e-learning strategy, and for his focus on the relationship between change management and e-learning. In this email exchange with eLearn editor-in-chief Lisa Neal, Dublin makes a case for the idea that e-learning innovation in the future will be driven more by learners than by technology.

Lisa Neal: Which recent innovations in e-learning do you believe have the most potential and why?

Lance Dublin: …

How do I encourage my users to use the e-Learning tools we plan to provide them?

This is probably the most often asked question I am asked by CAD Managers who are looking to find the best way to invest in training and learning tools for their users. As many of you have heard me comment during the AUGI sessions, “make it fun!”. It should not be perceived as work but a CONTEST among peers to determine the most knowledgeable; not the smartest, but the one who knows the best uses of the MAJOR software in which you and your company have invested.

We have found another great article in CLO Magazine “E-Learning Success: Engaging …

St. Louis CadCamp Update - When will we be a 3D Majority?
November 2, 2006

What a great question and later in this post we will expand on it.

This was my first visit to St. Louis, other than driving thru on the way to New Orleans back in 1972 on the way to the Super Bowl. From the ride in from the airport and seeing the famous arches at night, Impressive.

Unfortunately as it always happens with the CadCamp tour, just because we finally arrive to all of the great cities, does not mean we get to see them. Normally we arrive at 6 to 7 PM ( dark outside) go to the hotel and have …

Blogging as a Learning Tool- It works if you use it!
November 1, 2006

In a posting by Tony Karrer in his eLearning Technology blog, he presents a report from PEW Research that indicates the use of blogs by adults is growing dramtically, yet most still read magazines and periodicals.

Take a gander at Tony’s comments from last July ‘Pew Survey on Blogging’ and download the report.

Update on Bloglines for the CadCampers

I just found an interesting posting regarding Bloglines, and for those of you who have attended my classes at the AUGI CadCamps, you will remember that I feel strongly that Blogs and particularly Bloglines is a “must have” tool for learning, especially Informal Learning and Knowledge Management.

Here is the link to the POSTING in ‘Market Position’ Newsletter entitled Ask.com Embraces Blogs with New Features that I hope you will check out. The article reinforces the ideas covered in my class regarding blogs and continues to suggest that tools like these are very useful and productive.

As promised, I am in the process …

My Apologies
October 9, 2006

I inadvertently deleted a number of comments regarding some of my previous postings. Thankfully none of them were negative. But, a GOM ( Gross operator malfunction) took place and I put the comments into the trash by accident.

To those who did comment,I apologize and I think I have successfully trained myself on the WordPress application and it should not happen again. Keep the comments coming.

A new term associated with Blended Learning? Multi-Channel!
September 27, 2006

I like it…..

Brandon Hall Research, one of the leading consulting organizations associated with Learning and Learning Management Solutions has recently published mini-White Paper and is made available by Gary Woodilll and Brandon Hall associates entitled ‘The Move to Multi-Channel Learning’.

I found this terminology ‘new for me’ and intriguing in that we switch channels on a television, radio or for that matter a computer to learn something new or differently. The same is true of the learning experience. We switch the mode or medium related to that topic to learn more or better. As …

I can’t remember what we were taught in class!
September 26, 2006

“Memory, it seems, decays with awful rapidity: one hour after learning, 56% of the material is to the wind; one day later, 66% has evaporated; and after one month, 80% is gone.”
Rebecca Rupp, Author
Committed to Memory: How We Remember and Why We Forget

These are amazing statistics. Assuming that they are correct, it makes us wonder why we invest in classes or learning at all. Even if the percentages were halved it is still incredible. We’ve all heard the comments that one of the reasons for not attending training is that we will forget most of the information presented in the …

Why Companies do not send employees to class
September 25, 2006

How many of you have heard this before?
“Two weeks after I’ve sent my people to your classes they’ve forgotten most of what they learned… this makes it hard to continue to spend on the same kind of training. ”
or  “Our real cost of training isn’t what we pay a Trainer; it’s what we lose in production, lost time and salaries while our people are in your classes”
or “There’s never enough time or money available to train our people as well as you think they should be trained… and… there’s never going to be…” A past article by ZweigWhite, and sponsored by Bentley …
